Why are some days missing?
Photo evidence only covers images that contain both a useful date and reliable coordinates. Optional Apple location backup can provide evidence for future gaps. Elsewhere may infer a short gap when trusted evidence on both sides points to the same country. Longer or ambiguous gaps stay unresolved. Tap a date in Calendar to confirm one or more countries.
Why did Elsewhere suggest several stays?
Elsewhere uses confirmed home-country evidence, country changes, and meaningful evidence gaps to propose trip boundaries. It does not assume that every silent day belongs to a country. Open Evidence review to merge adjacent suggestions or split a stay at a real gap before approving it.
Does a suggested day change my allowance?
No. Suggested and inferred history remains reviewable. Only approved history, manual corrections, and planned trips are used in the calculation shown in the app.
What does the confidence state mean?
Confirmed days are backed by approved evidence or a manual correction. Inferred days use surrounding context. Unresolved days need your attention. You can inspect and change any non-planned day from Calendar.
Permissions
Photos and Location are optional.
Photo access lets Elsewhere read capture dates and available coordinates on the device. Location access can confirm the current country and, with Always Allow, collect low-power visit evidence for future gaps. You can use the planner and maintain history manually without either permission.
Travel rules
Use the count as a planning check.
Schengen calculations use a rolling 180-day window and count both arrival and departure days. The app also includes UK visitor and ETA guidance for US passport holders. Rules and individual circumstances change, so confirm the result with the relevant authority before travel.
Data and backup
Who is Elsewhere designed for?
Elsewhere is designed for US passport holders. You can record a Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa, including the issuing country and validity dates. Support for other citizenships is planned for a future release.
Can I back up my history?
Yes. In version 1.1, open Settings, then Sync & backups. Optional private iCloud sync includes recovery points. You can also export an encrypted file backup with a passphrase that is not stored and cannot be recovered. Restoring previews changes and creates a local undo copy before replacing history. With sync enabled, confirmed restoration changes can reach your other devices. Update all participating devices to version 1.1 for the new sync system.
How do I remove my data?
Open Settings to manage local data. Removing data from this device or deleting the app does not erase iCloud copies or exported files. Use the separate Delete all iCloud data and backups action to request cloud deletion. If iCloud is unavailable, the request remains pending. Photo and Location permissions can be changed in iOS Settings.
Is Elsewhere legal advice?
No. Elsewhere is a planning aid. Border and immigration decisions remain with the relevant authorities. Check current official guidance before travel.
